Participants
The course is aimed at individuals working, or intending to work, in a sport or activity environment (where they may be working in ‘isolation’ and without immediate access to additional medical support) who are required to establish a level of knowledge and understanding of the principles which underpin the management of an ill or injured athlete and will be expected to have core skills which allow them to intervene and immediately apply essential life-saving measures until further professional medical assistance is available
Participants will need to provide evidence that they have pre-existing knowledge, skills and experience and have successfully completed a ‘basic’ level first aid course within in the last three years
Participants must be a minimum of 18 years of age
Content
The course covers topics relating to the initial recognition, assessment and management of common life-threatening medical conditions and musculoskeletal injuries in sport, including:
medico-legal issues
roles of a ‘sports first aider’ / personal competency
risk assessment / medical emergency action planning / incident management
initial assessment of the ill or injured athlete (MScccR ABCDE)
airway and breathing management (manual manoeuvres / ventilation)
manageable positions
sudden cardiac arrest
basic life support / cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
use of automated external defibrillator (AED)
chest, abdominal and pelvic injury
bleeding and hypovolaemic shock
medical emergencies (anaphylaxis / asthma / diabetes / seizures / choking)
head/facial injuries / sport-related concussion
spinal injury management (at a fundamental level)
fractures and dislocations
ligamentous and musculotendinous injury
the ‘on-field’ musculoskeletal assessment and decision-making process (SPORTS ER)
non-complex limb injury (splintage / evacuation)
